OLW58 - Yellow, Orange, and Aqua

We have a new challenge this week from Susan at Simplicity.  Our challenge this week is to make a one layer card using the colors yellow, orange, and aqua.  The only difficult thing about the challenge this week was trying to decide what I wanted to color yellow, orange, and aqua!  I finally decided to use the Inkadinkado fish stamps I got a few weeks ago. I have no idea why I wanted fish stamps, but they seem to leap in my basket without me knowing it....really! I actually made two cards, the first one I wasn't overjoyed with, so I did another one and added a little more to it.  I think I'll show you my second card first...

I used a vertical fold card base (BTW, am I the only one that makes my own card base? Do you buy your card base, and if so, where?  I really like the vertical fold better than a horizontal fold...no idea why, I just do).  Now...back to the card.  I've been practicing with my brayer...see?  I actually did it without getting the dreaded lines across my card! YAY ME!  For this card, I stamped my fish with black Memento, then colored them with twinkling H2Os.  I rarely use the h2os but, I thought I'd give it a try on these fish.  I also cut a mask from paper to cover the fish while I brayered the tempting turquoise on to the card stock.  The sentiment is from Paper Smooches, and kind of fit the fish theme.

Okay, now here's the first card I did...

I used a "water" stamp that I've had for a while and stamped the little water lines, but then decided I just didn't like it very much.  I definitely like it better with 2 fish and the brayered water.

And last but not least, I also made a card for the technique challenge at Splitcoast which was to make a patchwork card.  Since I used to quilt (many moons ago), I decided to make a quilt block with the Ohio Star pattern.  After I adhered the paper pieces to a piece of card stock, I embossed it with a SU embossing folder.  Kinda cool....huh!

Playing along in all the different challenges has really made me step out of my comfort zone...and in the process, I've learned a lot.  If you haven't played in a card challenge, you should give it a try.  I still love to scrapbook and do it often, but card making is a source of instant gratification.  A layout may take me 4-5 hours (and sometimes I piddle with it for several days!), but a card is usually finished in under an hour. Like I said, instant gratification.

Thanks so much for stopping by! I appreciate all your comments...they make my day!  Until next time....

Hugs!

Both are great (actually all three) but I really like the fish card! Wonderful colors and oh, I so wish I could use a brayer without getting those lines. This is just great.

You like the vertical fold because a card stands up better that way than with a horizontal fold. That HAS to be the reason because that is the reason I like it!!!
Love the two fish card. It fits the sentiment better because it says Birthday fishes (plural) instead of Birthday fish (one fish). The blue is so perfectly watery!

Yay you, indeed! Great work on the brayering! I like all three. I have a soft spot for quilted cards, and it has been ages since I've done any (maybe this week-end?). I like your fish cards, I like the yellow and orange colouring on your single fish, he's cute.

Great ccards, the fishes have captured my heart! I always make my own card bases, it's cheaper, I can do whatever form I want! Valerie

Fab cards Susan, love the fishes stamp. The colours shout fishes/water to me but I don't have any stamps like that...I wish some would jump in my basket sometime :)
Well done for getting the word 'piddle' into your post...it really made me laugh :D

Oh, Susan. So much fabulousness on one post! I like the single fish card, but agree that the brayered one is just way cooler...can't BELIEVE you brayered that smoothly! Plus the richness of the colors really makes that two-fish card special!

The quilt card is just amazing!!!! Love the texture of it.

I fold my own card bases. My paper trimmer and ScorPal are the two most used items in my craft room.

I totally agree that challenges are a great way to push out of your comfort zone. I resolved to do more this year, and got a little burned out on them. I've taken a break the past few weeks but want to get back to my favorites next week!

I love your fish! I'm glad they jumped into your basket. Great job of brayering and I like the stamped water with the single fish. I love the Ohio Star quilt card. Your colors are wonderful!

I cut my cardstock and fold. I couldn't do without my papercutter. In fact I wore the lines off one and had to replace it! I also bought a Score Buddy a while back and I love it for folding my cards, especially when I have a class and need to cut and score 100 cards or more. What a time saver!

ps - I ckicked "Beta" and whoa -- definately is a different set up for Blogger. They will be going to that in the future. I was a test -- I gave feedback and then went BACK to original.
